INVITE ONLY
In this 75-minute session, Lake Blitz volunteers will learn from wildlife conservationists from B.C. and Ontario who are working to protect freshwater species and their habitats and will share how volunteers can get involved. In this meeting, there will be time to ask questions about wildlife conservation and the Lake Blitz monitoring protocol.
According to the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 11.7% of freshwater species are listed as “at risk”, with 17.9% listed as “Special Concern” (2022). As development, pollution and climate change continue to grow, increased disruption to these species and their habitats is expected. Thankfully there are organizations in Canada working to address this issue through monitoring, education, and restoration.
Joining us from Ontario is Grace Wiley, Turtle Education & Outreach Coordinator from the Turtle Guardians. From B.C. is Neil Fletcher, Director of Conservation Stewardship from the B.C. Wildlife Federation. These speakers will offer valuable insights into their work and provide an outlook on how two provinces are addressing the threat of biodiversity loss in aquatic ecosystems.
Participants will be registered Lake Blitz volunteers who are actively collecting observations on their local lakes across Canada.
Hosted by Living Lakes Canada, the National Lake Blitz Program seeks to empower individuals from all over Canada to take an active role in stewarding their local lakes. Through the practice of monitoring for climate change driven impacts such as rising water and air temperatures, invasive species encroachment and wildlife monitoring we can better understand the state of our lakes through community-led data collection.
