Crowsnest Pass CABIN Field Assistant Certification

Living Lakes Canada will be hosting a CABIN field assistant certification in the Crownest Pass in Coleman, Alberta.

The training is part of Living Lakes Canada’s STREAM project which is a collaboration between the World Wildlife Fund-Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada and the University of Guelph. The STREAM project aims to generate better understanding of the health of river systems across Canada through building community based water monitoring capacity and and applying cutting edge genomics tecnology.

Participants include representatives from the Oldman Watershed Council, North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance, Athabasca Watershed Council, Blood Tribe and the Elk River Alliance. Participants will collect benthic macroinvertebrate samples using the CABIN methods for their local biomonitoring programs. Samples for DNA analysis by the University of Guelph and traditional taxonomic analysis will be collected.

This course will also support the Rocky Mountain Eastern Slopes Collaborative project. This project includes various representatives from all levels of government, First Nations, academia, Watershed Advisory Planning Committees, environmental consultants stewardship groups that are collaborating to develop a CABIN/DNA reference model for the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains for source water protection.
