Haolun Tian – Long Lake

The history of glaciation and ice ages is written upon the geology of Ontario. Glacial lakes are some of the most beautiful examples of this. This photo is of Long Lake, a small lake in South Frontenac County, Ontario. Located within the Queen’s University Biological Station land base and the Frontenac Arch Biosphere, the south end of Long Lake has a lot of marl, a beautiful blue-green material consisting of clay and carbonate-rich minerals. Often mistaken for algae, marl is actually a mineral that forms through the calcification of plants.
